Wilmington Cold Storage Facility to Create New Jobs

WILMINGTON — A grant is helping bring jobs and a multimillion dollar investment to the Port City. This week the governor announced a cold storage facility project slated for the Port of Wilmington received funding it needed to get underway. The more than 75,000 square foot cold facility will store locally produced products like pork and vegetables and create 100 jobs.

Governor on the Port of Wilmington Cold Storage

Raleigh, N.C.– Governor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker recently announced that USA InvestCo plans to create 100 jobs and invest more than $15 million in a new cold storage facility at the Port of Wilmington.

The company is developing the Port of Wilmington Cold Storage facility (PWCS), a 75,000-square-foot cold storage facility that will store locally produced pork, poultry, fruits and vegetables. PWCS could eventually be expanded to 300,000 square feet depending on demand.

NC exports hit a record high of $14.8 Billion USD, in the first half of 2012.  North Carolina merchandise exports increased by 6 percent in the first half of 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA).

NC Ranks 5th in Nation for Chinese Investment Dollars

North Carolina ranked the 5th-largest state in the Nation for Chinese investment, according to a recent article from the Triangle Business Journal.  Chinese Investment in NC follows only investment in California, New York, Texas and Illinois. North Carolina attracts Chinese investment dollars largely thanks to connections through the state’s universities. The article also details the pending sale of Smithfield Foods to China’s Shuanghui International Holdings Limited, a $5 Billion sale.

Port of Wilmington and Maersk Line Collaboration

Port of Wilmington and Maersk Line, the world’s largest container shipping company, are working together to expand the port’s global market. One way that they have done this is by encouraging companies to change their methods of shipping cargo to South America. These companies are now using more efficient methods of shipping through the Port of Wilmington. Maersk is also adding additional port calls to the South Atlantic Express, which offers service between Port of Wilmington and Latin America.
