This week, TWC News featured the Port of Wilmington Cold Storage project in Wilmington, North Carolina.  Their article discusses the project costs, job creation, and features and interview with PWCS Principal Chuck McCarthy.

WILMINGTON — A grant is helping bring jobs and a multimillion dollar investment to the Port City. This week the governor announced a cold storage facility project slated for the Port of Wilmington received funding it needed to get underway. The more than 75,000 square foot cold facility will store locally produced products like pork and vegetables and create 100 jobs.

“From forklift driving to management jobs to receiving jobs,” said Chuck McCarthy, president of Port of Wilmington Cold Storage. He said an $800,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation helped seal the deal for the more than $15 million project. “It will help us pay for the racking in the facility which is a huge portion of the building itself and it cemented our partnership with the state,” said McCarthy. He said they’re also working with foreign investors to raise money, and they’re more than halfway to meeting their goal.

Officials said the facility will not only bring jobs and money to the Wilmington area, it will also support our state’s farmers and producers. “It will allow our regional farmers and producers the ability to keep their business local as opposed to going to South Carolina or Virginia to ship their product overseas,” said Connie Majure-Rhett, president and CEO of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce.

“One of the biggest costs is transportation, so if they can get to a port and get on a boat faster with less mileage it will save them dollars on their cost,” said McCarthy.
