The Port of Wilmington Cold Storage facility is bigger and colder than anything most people have ever seen or felt. And for businesses small and large, it is starting to heat up.

The Cold Storage facility is a massive, 3 million cubic foot facility, divided into a refrigerated loading and storage dock, a larger freezer section, and a blast-freezer compartment. But what sets it apart is its location inside the Port of Wilmington, according to Charles “Chuck” McCarthy, president of Cold Storage.

A new addition to the Port of Wilmington could save producers money and bring new business to the port.

Officials announced the opening of the Port of Wilmington Cold Storage facility Monday.

Chuck McCarthy, company president, said the 101,000 square feet facility has spaces for 10,600 pallets.

McCarthy predicts at full operation with as much as 20 million pounds of product turning eight to 10 times per year.

Most of the products stored inside the facility are frozen foods and meats, but also pharmaceuticals and ingredients for cosmetics.

Governor Pat McCrory and the North Carolina State Ports Authority, along with USA InvestCo, broke ground on a new 101,000-square-foot cold storage facility this morning. The warehouse facility is located directly on terminal at the Port of Wilmington and is expected to create more than 100 new jobs. North Carolina’s agriculture business has always relied heavily on the Port of Wilmington and this specific construction, offering over 11,000 pallet positions, represents further development in that market.
