The temperatures inside Port of Wilmington Cold Storage (PWCS) may be below freezing, but the demand for cold storage in North Carolina is red hot. PWCS is a new, 101,000 square foot refrigerated warehouse used to maintain specific temperatures for the storage of perishable goods, such as fruits, vegetables and proteins.

A new addition to the Port of Wilmington could save producers money and bring new business to the port.

Officials announced the opening of the Port of Wilmington Cold Storage facility Monday.

Chuck McCarthy, company president, said the 101,000 square feet facility has spaces for 10,600 pallets.

McCarthy predicts at full operation with as much as 20 million pounds of product turning eight to 10 times per year.

Most of the products stored inside the facility are frozen foods and meats, but also pharmaceuticals and ingredients for cosmetics.

Wilmington Port Signs New Deal For Service To And From Asia.

The brief vacancy caused by the recent collapse of Hanjin Shipping Co. at the Port of Wilmington has been shored up.

On Monday N.C. State Ports Authority officials announced a new partnership with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Maersk Line with the addition of the TP10/Amberjack all-water Asia-U.S. East Coast container service.
